I’m Lia Rain Pierson,
a 27 year old artist based in Darlington, MD.
I fell in love with drawing while living and working on a farm in Whiteford as a child, but was never compelled to pick up a paintbrush until I began to experience the wider world’s fleeting beauty as an adult. There is no practice that can capture the intimate moments with nature and our evolving environment the way plein air painting does. I hope to record the character of our historic barns before they are demolished like the ones I loved growing up, the tranquility of our streams while they are still clean, the drama of the storm before it passes, and the vastness of our countryside through every season.
My second love has always been printmaking. I found full time work in screenprinting but my heart lies with linocuts. The bold expressiveness in black and white has great potential for storytelling for me, and the process is incredibly satisfying. Lately these projects have sat on the backburner while I hone my painting skills, but when the weather turns cold again I know I will be pouring my heart into the press once again. Please forgive their absence on this website for now, getting them scanned and uploaded for you in all their mats and variations has proved to be a bit of a technical challenge, but I promise it will be done soon.
Above all I am deeply grateful to Joe, who has truly brought the best out of me. Our outings together are the reason most of this art exists, and this website too! And to you, the visitor reading this, thank you for taking the time to check us out. I hope you find something here that speaks to you in some way.
