Lia Rain Pierson
Plein air painter and printmaker based in Darlington, Maryland.
I fell in love with drawing while living and working on a farm on the Maryland/Pennsylvania line, but I wasn't compelled to pick up a paintbrush and explore color until I experienced the wider world as an adult. Working outside and enjoying nature, every breath of fresh air is worthy of a painting. No other practice captures the intimacy of a moment like plein air painting, and there is no better way to spend my time than outdoors at the easel. The world as we know it is rapidly changing, so I hope to record the character of our historic barns before they are demolished like the ones I loved growing up, the tranquility of our streams and trails while they are still clean, and the vastness of the countryside we call home.
Printmaking is my second passion. I found work in screen printing but after hours it’s all linocuts. The boldness of black and white has great potential for telling my story, and the process is incredibly satisfying. Lately these projects have sat on the backburner while I hone my painting skills, but when the weather turns cold I will be back on the press again. Please forgive their absence on this website for now, getting them uploaded in all their variations has proved to be a bit of a technical challenge, but I promise it will be done soon.
I have to thank Joe, who has brought the best out of me. Our outings together are the reason most of this art, and this website, exists. And to you, the visitor reading this, thank you for taking the time to check us out. Art is our pathway to freedom.
Let’s work together.
